"Diversify your IRA or 401K by purchasing stock in dollar blocks of $1500-$2000 to keep things managable for you"

Dow Jones Industrial Average 11808.79 (UP) Week ending 10/21/2011

I am always looking for stock positions to diversify my IRA portfolio that tend to be broken down into blocks of $1500 to $2000 to form building blocks. So in a $10,000 portfolio you may have 4 or 5 stocks
that are Large cap or Mid cap , then maybe one or two stocks that are Small capitalization companies. So I am looking for good fundamental value as far as price to earnings and revenue growth and preferably a stock that I can buy a fair amount of shares of. In this current trading environment it does not hurt to have a dividend.

So what would I buy on Monday?  NOKIA Corp. ADR (Symbol NOK, $6.61) , (logo the work of Atakos.com , Design and Marketing blog)
You could buy 250 shares here for $1652.50. This would fill a large cap stock position in your portfolio. NOK pays a nice dividend yield of 7.26 percent. Revenues and earnings have been sickly here the last year because of a short term lack of competitive product to compete with the Apple I-phone and multi-platformed Google Android phone lines. However the word is that the Nokia smartphone with the new simplified Microsoft phone interface in it will be out for the Christmas sales season. I think this new simplified phone interface will be well accepted internationally. Remember, even in an off year, this company did over 58 billion in revenue.

Another stock I like right here is NVIDIA Corp. (Symbol NVDA, $14.48). You could buy 125 shares for $1810.00. NVDA has a long term growth rate of 16.91%. Earnings for 2012 looks like $1.00 per share and for 2013, $1.18 per share. The company's "best 3D technology for the PC just got better with the introduction of new NVIDIA(R)3D Vision(TM) products, which deliver greater realism and immersion than ever for 3D games, movies and photos".  The company pays no dividend but has the major plus in these leveraged times of having zero long term debt. Tech stocks as a sector seemed to be ready for some upside movement in this 4th quarter.

People tend to diversify by market sectors, but don't forget to also diversify with large cap, mid cap, small cap and international stocks.

Have a good last trading week of October. Still have Halloween on the following Monday. Make sure you don't eat all the candy before the kids get there!

"Some ideas extracted from Investors Business Daily and some from Jim Cramer's Mad Money TV show"

Dow Jones Industrial Average 11103.12  (Down) Week ending 10-07-2011

Some times a small reward in your day can help you make it
through. Hershey Co Inc. (symbol HSY, $58.99) can deliver these chocolate treats and has been doing it for years. This tasty stock has a one year total return of 21.9% and a three year total return of 68.6%.  The stock pays a nice 2.34% dividend and has a staggering Return on Equity percentage of  67.00%. The IDB rating is 90-62-92. Earnings growth a little mild, but very consistent.

Another stock that jumped out at me from IDB was not usually a stock that you would often talk about. STAMPS.COM (symbol STMP, $24.72) has a long term growth rate of 18%. Stamps has an IDB rating of 99-89-99 A+, B. , with 99 the highest rating you can get for growth. 12 month Total Return is 67.6% and the 3 year Total Return of 173.8%.   These are two stocks that I saw in Investors Business Daily that peaked my interest. They do an excellent job of extracting data and making it easy to see and understand.

Jim Cramer of CNBC , who went to the same high school as my wife Deborah here in Springfield (Montco) PA., works harder than anyone I know to bring you just tremendous investment ideas on his TV show Mad Money and on his websites. You will find his websites on the links on the right column of my blog. I was lucky enough to be watching when Jim brought on to his show the CEO of Whiting Petroleum Corp. (symbol WLL,$35.54) . This stock is flat out great value investment which is down this year. The CEO is committed to getting the stock price back up. Great fundamentals and  explosive earnings growth with 2011 earnings per share of $3.67 per share and 2012 earnings of $4.66. This company has 18, (count'em) , strong buy recommendations according to SmartMoney.

Jim , (pictured), a week later brought the CEO of Red Hat Inc. (symbol RHT,$42.88) on to his show and rolled out just another great company.
Long term growth 20.40%. 12 strong buy recommendations. The stock is only up 1.5% this year but the three year total return of 222.2%. We can live with that number!  This company helps companies save money. That is a winning concept all the time.

One  last recommendation from Jim is Big Blue,  International Business Machines Corp. (symbol IBM, 182.39).  Eleven strong buy recommendations.  The price might look high on a historical basis, but the company is projecting 2012 earnings of $14.75 per share. A three total return of 104%. Not too shabby!

So it's OK to use the other guys recommendations when they are going to make you money. They have full research staffs to help them out and lots of eyes and ears out there to find those great ideas. Three bucks for an daily IDB and Jim Cramer gives you lots of free stuff and also offers professional services if you prefer their inside stuff and a timing advantage.

So hope for sunny fall skies and Dow 12,000. Have a good week.

"A little Wilson family history and of course an investment angle, Ancestry.Com"

Dow Jones Industrial Average  11,872  (UP, 8th week in a row)  Week ending 01-20-2011

My Great-great grandfather was Thomas Bushnell Wilson. Back in 1870 he owned an estate in Rye/Harrison, WestChester County New York . It was north of the Highland Road and west of  Rye Park, Purchase Avenue, and Blind Creek. If he hadn't sold it, it would be worth millions today. He was married to Sara Whitney who was a descendant of the famous John Whitney family of Watertown, Massachusetts in the 1600's. This makes me a distant cousin of Eli Whitney and Stephen Whitney (second richest man to John Jacob Astor in his day). Stephen Whitney made his money speculating in Cotton, Real Estate and Alcohol.

It gets even better. My Great grandfather Stephen Whitney Wilson Sr. was in the New York State Militia , 7th Regiment. They were a.k.a the"Silk Stocking" Regiment, (due to the disproportionate number of its members who were part of New York City's social elite). Their primary mission back in 1881 was to guard the Stock Exchange.
They must have established my hereditary bond and interest in the stock exchanges, like a baby duck being imprinted to it's mother.

Stephen was married to my great grandmother Anna Cornelia Beam. Anna is a descendant of the oldest daughter, (Mary Holmes Brown), of the Reverend Obadiah Holmes the pioneering Baptist minister. Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President, was a descendant of Lydia Holmes, who was the youngest daughter of the Reverend Obadiah Holmes. So "the Ancient" is a blood relative of mine also. Cousin Abe.

My grandfather, Stephen Whitney Wilson Jr. , was a member of the Ringling Bros. Circus of Baribou , Wisconsin. He was poor as dirt because his father died when he was 5. But he was rich in storytelling and good humor and has left our family with a written scroll with stories about his times traveling with the circus.

My father, Howard Hassel Wilson, was a bus driver. He passed  away when I was 5, just the same as my grandfather's father had. I never really thought about whether we were rich or poor. We were just happy.
And now you are here listening to me. I am the one speaking for all of them in this great time continuum. Interesting.

So is there an investment angle here? You bet there is! If I had written this article a year ago you would have been up 146% for the year on this stock.

ANCESTRY.COM INC. (Symbol ACOM, $34.23) is the stock with that 146% Total Return last year. Ancestry that fountain of growing and flowing information like censuses, pictures, historical documents and notes, immigration roles, family trees, birth, death, marriage records and a whole lot more. 2010 earnings are $.77 cents a share and 2011 is looking like $1.05 per share.  Ancestry's earnings are growing at an 18% a year pace. Revenues continue to grow at a steady rate and long term liabilities continue to drop at a rapid pace as the company pays down their debt from solid cash flow.

Ancestry is expanding out to a more global customer base and has added special searches for various ethnic groups.  They have also added connections to Facebook and Twitter social networking sites and elected Facebook's Mike Schroepfer to their Board of Directors just this week. You are also seeing TV shows where celebrities are researching their families, gaining public interest in the subject. There is plenty of room for revenue expansion here as Ancestry did only $225 million in sales last year. Once you get started with your research it is very addicting!

So buy some stock in Ancestry and hopefully you will make enough money to buy a few yearly subscriptions to their service and find out your heritage like I did above. Who knows who you could be connected to!

Stay warm in this cold winter,

"Time to see where the Sunny in Philadelphia gang are investing their money"

Dow Jones Industrial Average 11203.55  (UP) week ending 11-19-2010

Well we heard from Ben Graham last week here at Freewilly's Stockpicker blog so I thought we would go to the other extreme for some expert advice on investing from our local Philadelphia celebrities from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" . Surely their interesting views of the world will turn up some real hits.  They all invest based on their personal interest, and of course, based on a 1-3 year Fundamental Analysis,  just like my blog.

We will start with "Mac" because he always claims to be the leader of the TV "Gang". With his Kung-fu and many kick-boxing tactics he would like the super sports picks , Under Armour Inc. (Symbol UA, $54.25) to get that slim look he wants and  CABELA'S INC. Symbol CAB, $21.86) to get all hunting gear that he needs to take on opponents. Born in Philadelphia, he truly understands the Philadelphia mentality of throwing snowballs at Santa Claus.

"Charlie", another star of the Gang at Paddy's Pub,  would definitely be looking to invest in  Snap-On Inc (Symbol SNA, $52.89) because he needs his various tools to kill small baby rats. His second pick would be PETsMART Inc. (Symbol PETM, $37.84) because Frank and him at times have been reduced to eating cat food in their slum apartment. Yuk!  Although Charlie frequently abuses inhalants such as glue and spray paint he comes in with some good insights for stock picking. As Co-owner of Paddy's pub he also has an affinity for Boston Beer Company, (Symbol SAM, $82.26) but thinks you need to wait for it to come in a little bit and change it's name to Philadelphia Beer company. But that name is taken, so then simply change the name to Paddy's Beer or Charlie's Beer.

"Dennis", who was raised on the Mainline with his twin sister Dee and father Frank , has a very high opinion of himself. He will be mad I didn't put him first in this article. Dennis would probably go for Proctor and Gamble Co. (Symbol PG, $64.05) because of their new Dove for Men skin care soap to make him look good. He would also buy shares of Google Inc. (Symbol GOOG, $590.83) so he could look good with his friends and smart for buying such a good and high dollar stock. Though in one Episode,
he and Dee decide they are going to go on welfare and not work anymore.
They end up desperate to the point where they would probably search in dumpsters for food. So he would also like Waste Management Inc. (Symbol WM, $35.22)  because of their vast supply of dumpsters.

Dee, also known as "Sweet Dee", has an affinity to wear Angel Wings so is torn in her stock choices between Victoria's Secret owner Limited Brands Inc. (Symbol LTD, 33.01) and the super chic Philly based Urban Outfitters Inc. (Symbol URBN, $37.26) . Like most females she can't decide so she will probably buy both of them.
Deandra, who was unpopular in high school because of having to wear an aluminum back brace, aspires to be an actress, so she might have an interest in  Dreamworks Animation (Symbol DWA, $31.08).  Maybe she could turn Charlie's dream book into a movie.

Frank, what a father. He water boarded his daughter Dee in the urinal at paddy's pub to gain a confession from her.  Frank's dream is to have a Hawaiian Luau feast for his birthday and roast a Pig. He would purchase Sanderson Farms Inc. (Symbol SAFM,  $42.61) and  Hormel Foods Corporation (Symbol HRL, $47.64) so he would have a steady supply of Pigs!  Frank is also very impressed with Sherwin Williams (Symbol SHW, $73.12) because of the fine job it did with painting the dilapidated boat that they had purchased. He also loves their paint for using for doing graffiti work. Frank, the always shady business man who owned a Vietnamese sweatshop, would certainly want some Casino action and would like the low priced Boyd Gaming Co. (Symbol BYD, $8.95).

The ever strange McPoyle brothers which are the nemesis of "the gang" would buy Tasty Baking Co. (Symbol TSTY, $6.35). Why, because it's Philadelphia, and Tasty is where the Chocolate Junior comes from.

Tasty Baking, the Philadelphia based baker is an earnings turnaround story into 2011 and a possible buyout candidate.

The Waitress and Rickety Cricket also send their regards. The are putting their money in Philadelphia Municipal Bonds. They are hoping that the Phillies do not win another World Series and cost the city an expensive million dollar parade!

So join the "Gang" and watch them every Thursday night on FX at 10:00.

Best Regards,   Freewilly

Why play at the card table, when you can own the House?

Dow Jones 10,325.26 (Down) Week ending 02-26-2010

Well, are you tired of buying and selling stocks and not having the mathematical advantage? It is sort of like being a player at the casino Blackjack card table. Well, why not own the "house" instead and to quote gamblers parlance,"work off the juice". You can do this by purchasing the stock of the stock exchange,
NYSE Euronext (Symbol NYX , $26.38).
This stock has a 4.55% dividend yield so you get paid why you wait for the exchange volume to increase. The PE on the stock is a reasonable PE 11.42. The 12 month total return on the stock of 63.4%. Earnings for 2010 are projected at 2.31 per share and $2.61 per share for 2011. Not too shabby for a $26.00 dollar stock.

If you wanted to look at a second option for owning the "house" you can also look at IntercontinentalExchange Inc. (with the cool symbol , ICE , $107.29) This fast growing exchange has a five year revenue growth rate of 60%. They operate at 31.8 % Net margin numbers. The stock has estimated earnings of $5.34 per share for 2010 and $6.16 per share for 2011.

I also want to note at this point to the amateur investor, that the stocks I have mentioned in the last two weeks blogs at $100 and $200 a share actually may be much less expensive, based on value, than stocks that trade for $1 or $5 per share. Those low price stocks may be highly leveraged with many more shares outstanding, which dilutes the earnings of each share.

There are other "houses" of note certainly, among them the well known CME Group Inc. Cl A (Symbol CME) and Goldman Sachs (Symbol GS). One other one that I like and own in this group, which I feel is a good value, is Morgan Stanley (Symbol MS, $28.18). The PE on the stock is only 9. Solid earnings of $3.11 in 2010 and $3.54 in 2011. There is a vacuum now in the investment industry with Lehman Bros. and Bear Stearns being gone, so all these "houses" should become stronger.

So deal yourself a winning hand and add one of these to your diversified portfolio.

Sincerely,

Freewilly
